Starry Night

Check it out: another FO (finished object) by Mom! This one is a queen-sized quilt made for her younger brother and his wife. This quilt traveled across Canada - from St. Catharines, ON to Airdrie, AB - to reach its new home. (Howdy, Ken and Shirleyan!)

This pattern is called "Starry Night" and it's a pattern with a few variations. The ones I have seen share the same basic characteristics: they are typically done in shades of blue, ranging from deep midnight to pale sky; they are pieced together as simple square blocks; the colour gradation changes from dark to light in a diagonal pattern across the quilt; and of course, the white stars are scattered across the top. In this quilt, my mom appliqued the stars on the quilt top after she pieced it all together. In the close-up detail (folded back here, to show the back of the quilt) you can see the quilted design is also a pattern of stars. This was done by machine at a local quilt and fabric shop.

I have a Starry Night quilt myself, and it is different from this one. Mine is also done in similar shades of blue, but the blocks are larger. The white stars are not appliqued, but are blocks pieced into the quilt top in a random pattern. And instead of the starry machine quilting, mine was handstitched in a swirly pattern. It reminds me a lot of the Van Gogh painting. Now I'm wondering if there are other quilt patterns named after famous artwork. Something to check on Google...

I think you either have a craft talent or you don't and both my Sister & my Niece (who run this blog) most definitely have an overabundance of talent in an amazing array of fields (so much so that I think they got all the genes & bypassed me! lol) I don't just mean the little crafty things you do with your kids when they're little, I did all those & enjoyed it, but what these 2 ladies create is a talent that deserves to be recognized for sure. Which they are now doing thru the wonderful age of computers.
Approx. 30 yrs. ago (not sure how that many yrs. have passed, a big # considering I'm not that much older than that! lol) my Sister & her family moved quite a distance away, starting with Thunder Bay, Cochrane, Dryden, Sault Ste. Marie, and finally to St. Catharines. I worked in an office in our hometown and each yr. approaching Christmas all the office staff would come to me asking "when are the boxes arriving?" These boxes would be delivered to me filled with such an amazing variety of the coolest crafts that my sister had made which I sold for her. Even when all sold out everyone would still be looking & asking for more! I recall one yr. she made so much from just the crafts sold that she bought herself a kitchen table set! I kept telling her that we needed to live closer so that we could go into business together, she of course would do all the talented crafts & I would do what I do best, the book work! Of course that never happened with the miles between us, but she continued over all these yrs. to only enhance her crafts so much so that each time I check this site I'm astounded once again at her incredible talent that she has always impressed me with. Not only with the crafts but her gardening is absolutely amazing, their yard is so beautiful showing her green thumb. And the talent doesn't stop there, it extends to her decorating, her cooking, baking . . . . .
Ever since our children were babies we've all looked forward to all the goody packages Aunt Marj sends for birthdays & Christmas, there was always such thoughtful surprises in each one. Our daughter loved to wear dresses & my sister kept her in supply of beautiful homemade flowing dresses for years, some donned with pinafores, crinolines, ribbons & lace, they were beautiful! (& not only adorable for her but they usually came with a matching outfit for her doll, so cute!) I recall one visit to see her & we were in Fabric Land buying some material (she really should have had shares in these stores!) and she was smelling the fabric, even had me smell it, at which I thought was rather amusing, how could anyone love the smell of fabric? At which she had an excellent response, "well you think snowmobiles smell good" Touche! (we are avid snowmobilers & love winter)
In case you haven't noticed, I'm very proud of my sister. I've often thought, had we lived closer then maybe some of this talent would have rubbed off on me! lol
But it did most definitely rub off on her daughter Heather, my multi-talented beautiful niece. My husband and I just had our 20th anniversary & we hadn't seen our wedding video in all these yrs., so we sat down to watch it. We got quite a few chuckles out of how much more hair so many of the men had then! And interesting to see how much the younger ones have grown into young adults. During the speeches when my husband was addressing Heather for being part of our special day, he told her that I am so proud of her & that I always said she is really going to make it big one day. Well she proved me right because not only is she this multi talented lady with all her homemade things & gardening, baking, cooking etc. talent like her mother's, but she is a published author which is amazing in itself,(have you read any of her books?! They're so good! I was so impressed with them I got our local schools & downtown bookstore to get them!) She read us a beautiful keepsake poem at our wedding that she had written for us. She has had an amazing talent for words & writing from a very young age. I remember listening to her read to our oldest son when she was only about 6 or 7 and couldn't believe how well she could enunciate even then! This talent has been passed on to her & John's son Ronan, he is one truly advanced (& very cute) little boy!
Our family has been blessed with so many of my sisters's talented gifts over the yrs. I always enjoy reflecting back while decorating our Christmas tree, adding on all the different ornaments she made yrs ago, as well as annual ones we anticipated receiving to open early to add to the tree. We also have handmade quilts on our beds that she made, and my daughter & I each received one of those pretty bags you see posted on this site.
Keep up the amazing work ladies!
Sandy :-)
